2018 Coleman Draft Horse Driving Clinic

May 19th - May 22nd - Draft Horse Driving Clinic (8:30am – 4:30pm)
May 23rd - wrap up and departure                                     

This clinic is aimed at the skilled drivers looking to improve their driving skills with draft horses.  This is not a beginners clinic.  The focus is on the draft horse – their care, traditional usage, various hitches, practical skills.  The clinic is very hands on with lots of one on one time between clinicians and participants.  A wide variety of skills and topics will be covered including:

  • overall safety procedures, recognizing potential problems and how to deal with them
  • psychology and communications with the draft horse , preparedness
  • driving principles
  • the importance of nutrition , care of the horse, training, conditioning
  • proper harness fit, equipment 
  • placement, alignment, engagement, control, and movement of the well functioning horse or team
  • building an effective relationship between the horse and teamster/driver

Clinicians:  Brian and Colleen Coleman of Didsbury, Alberta, Canada. Brian is a six time World Champion teamster whose  background is in farming with horses.  Colleen’s background is in light horses.  They have been training horses together for over 25 years, have shown extensively internationally, have judged draft shows internationally.

Location:  Eaglesfield Percheron Ranch

  • Draft horse training facility near Cremona specializing in all phases of Percheron, Clydesdale, Belgian and Shire turnout and presentation
  • Dry camping available (with power hookups), box stalls provided for all horses, 480 acres of excellent driving trails
  • 20 minutes from Sundre – hotel available (Best Western)

Format: a combination of demo, group work, individual work with emphasis on meeting the needs of individual participants and their teams, very flexible in clinic structure


  • Limited to 8 participants where a participant is a teamster, assistant teamster, one team, all harness, one vehicle
  • All participants must be AEF members, must have horse handling experience (no beginners)
  • Limited auditors permitted – 5 per day, no contact with participants without permission


HCCDC Members: $300 (covers 1 team, 2 people)
Non-Members: $450

Auditors: $30/day (limited to 5 auditors per day; pre-registration required)

* NOTE: Members have until March 1 to sign up then it will be open registration.

General Notes:

  • Agricultural equipment and fields available for use
  • Limited wagons available for use (preference is you bring your own favorite wagon)
  • Hay will be provided
  • Schooling teams will be available – cost to be determined
  • If weather is uncooperative, may be able to rent a nearby arena – cost to be determined
  • Cell phone service is very poor at the ranch
  • Free time each evening, please bring guitar / instruments for campfire!
  • The theme of this clinic is for horses and people learn, practice and have FUN TOGETHER
